Digital Forensics for Malware Analysis

Bryan will discuss digital forensic science principles and practical uses – previewing/acquiring devices following a phishing incident. The risk is than an email on the endpoint may have included a weaponized attachment. Included will be a  discussion regarding a forensically-sound way of capturing that evidence and a few steps into identifying what’s going on with the script in the document (including indicators such as IP addresses, URLs, for command and control).

Presenter: Bryan McCaffrey

Bio: Bryan is an experienced cybersecurity analyst and digital forensic examiner. He also assesses cybersecurity risk of applications and infrastructure based on industry and open standards. Bryan’s career in cybersecurity started early on within the network security space. He has been involved in both network and endpoint-based forensic investigations for over fifteen years. and has worked from some of the larger companies in this capacity, such as Deloitte, Nortel, Cisco Systems, Guidance Software, Trustwave Spiderlabs. Bryan has worked for the Government of British Columbia and is currently a Senior Manager, Digital Forensics, Incident Response and Threat Intelligence with KPMG. When not working, Bryan is also working on a Masters degree, at Champlain College, in Digital Forensic Science. Bryan is an advocate for mental health in cybersecurity and a veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces.
